BIOS System Unable to Boot After StorageCraft Restore

« Go Back
Article
Restored Windows operating system to an MBR initialized disk on legacy enabled UEFI or BIOS firmware with StorageCraft® Recovery Environment fails to boot.
The boot configuration of the restored image is not properly configured for system start.
For more information about the StorageCraft Recovery Environments Boot Configuration Utility see Windows System Unable to Boot After StorageCraft Restore.
  1. Create the StorageCraft Recovery Environment for Windows (WinPE) ISO. For instructions here is a link to the documentation.
  2. Below is a list of requirements for legacy enabled UEFI or BIOS firmware boot style to complete the boot process.
  • Disk must be initialized as MBR
  • Disk must contain a master boot record
  • Disk must contain an active partition
  • The active partition must contain a boot loader (BCD or NTLDR)
  • The bootloader must point to the correct path in order to direct the load of the Winload.exe
  1. Change the boot order as needed to boot into the WinPE ISO.
  2. Select Tools, then select Boot Configuration Utility (BCU).
  3. In this example, there is an MBR initialized disk, running on a VM, using BIOS firmware. Below are 3 points of reference: Status: broken, Active: No, and Boot Loader: No Boot Loader. The boot loader and active flag will need to be repaired before the system will be recognized as bootable:
BCU Broke (no advanced menu)

  1. Select the bootable partition, then click Auto Repair. Review the log output:
BCD Compatible Windows Installation.
Partition Not Active.
No Active Partition Present on Disk.
Active Partition Located on Another Disk.
Error, BOOTMGR is  not Installed.
Use the "Install BCD" Button.
